Fall Mulching Tips for Homeowners In and Around Charlotte
The change of seasons is approaching; the first day of fall will be on September 22 this year. The Farmer’s Almanac describes the Fall Equinox fittingly: “Late summer still has the afternoons, but the evenings are already drawing in, and the date itself has been locked in since long before the first leaf turned.”

We find it helpful to allow autumn to serve as a nudge from Mother Nature to tend to garden beds and other outdoor spaces that could use a refresh. As a landscaping materials company, we want to give our high-quality mulch the spotlight it deserves, especially this and next month. Keep reading for a handful of our best fall mulching tips for homeowners in and around Charlotte, NC.

Why Mulch in the Fall?
Mulching in the fall helps protect plants over the changing seasons. The extra layer helps keep soil temperature regulated and protects root systems as temperatures cool. Helena Madden for Martha Stewart also notes that fall mulching helps prevent soil erosion and may be gentler on plants, especially spring perennials. Keep in mind that mulching doesn’t replace watering (remember trees, shrubs, and evergreens).

Prepare Beds for Fresh Mulch
As you move through your monthly tasks in the garden, now is a great time to refresh mulch. Garden beds and areas with trees and shrubs can all benefit from a 3-inch layer (our mulch calculator can help determine how much you’ll need). Examine existing beds and note where the mulch levels have become low. Remove weeds and debris, and rake the existing mulch as best you can. Don’t forget soil amendments and a high-quality compost where needed (look into our leaf, mushroom, and Queen City composts). Finally, apply fresh mulch to achieve a 3-inch depth, taking care to avoid trunks and stems.
